The 9th Annual Bowling Benefit for The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW) was a huge success this year with nearly 100 bowlers helping to raise $5,000. Tons of raffle gifts were donated by all the divisions at Local 223 along with sponsors from Allen Rd., Coolidge, Lynch Rd and Mich. Ave stations, RM&P field station, and The Blue Flames retiree group.
The high individual high bowlers for the day were Jessica Lemmon with a score of 732 and Brian Whitsett with a score of 823. What a great way to show your solidarity and help out the community, Local 223!
The DTE Energy Blue Water Energy Center, a $1 billion project in St. Clair County’s East China Township, is on schedule for an early 2022 opening of a new gas-fired power plant according to DTE Energy. DTE invited media on site in mid-June to see the progress that has been made at the plant.
Michael Banks will be the plant manager of the new Blue Water Energy Center and says a few hundred workers currently call the job-site home. Once completed, he will be directly in charge of the up to 40 full time workers at the new plant. The Blue Water Energy Center is expected to replace much of the generating capacity of several DTE coal plants, including the neighboring St. Clair Power Plant, once it is operational.
Nearly 3.5 million people suffered work-related injuries and 5,147 lost their lives on the job in 2017. While the toll of workplace injuries remains high, individuals such as Local 223 Safety Director Todd Burger are tirelessly working to improve safety within the utility industry. As a full-time safety director working at DTE Energy, Burger advocates for bringing first aid supplies, protective gear and industry standards that prevent devastating workplace injuries.
